Design has always mediated the complexities of function, ergonomics, production process and engineering to deliver a great experience to the end user. The almost exponential increase in technological complexity has only heightened the importance of a Human centered approach and the application of design principles from the outset.

It is a fact that emergent technologies sometimes evolve into unexpected and useful applications - sometimes without a target customer in mind. This ‘happy accident’ is rare, however, and as the possibilities increase from a physical product level to whole systems and globally connected devices, the appropriate use of design to ensure that the end experience is rooted in what people need – rather than what technology can do – becomes a key differentiator to maximizing appeal and market success.
